Michelin Keys: Everything You Need to Know

Exciting news for travelers! The Michelin Guide has just launched a new rating system that's transforming the way we look at hotels. Say hello to the Michelin Keys, the latest accolade recognizing the most exceptional stays in the Guide’s hotel selection.

Much like the famous Michelin restaurant ratings, this new system awards “keys” to outstanding hotels instead of stars. The term “Key” is based on Room Keys!  Expert inspectors from around the world evaluate these properties, some focusing on both restaurants and hotels, and others specializing in one category.

Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, France

Every hotel in the Michelin Guide's selection is eligible for a coveted Key, with over 5,000 unique accommodations worldwide, catering to every style and budget. Discover lively hotels and serene retreats, from bustling city centers to secluded countryside havens. Whether you prefer cutting-edge modern design or charming historical elegance, there is a property for you. Choose from castles, hostels, tents, ryokans, sky-high city hotels, or intimate rooms in ancient watchtowers.

Navigating hotel star ratings can be confusing, with no global standard in place. The Michelin Keys system cuts through this confusion, offering a trustworthy benchmark for discerning travelers. Unlike some systems where hotels self-select their ratings, Keys are awarded based on strict criteria, ensuring you can trust their recommendations.

The criteria for awarding a Key are straightforward, yet stringent. The hotel must:

1. Be a destination in itself.

2. Enhance the local experience.

3. Showcase outstanding architecture and interior design.

4. Offer consistent, high-quality service, comfort, and maintenance.

5. Reflect its unique personality and character.

6. Provide excellent value for the price paid.

The Keys focus on the overall experience, not just amenities.

Here’s what each key stands for:

One Michelin Key: A Very Special Stay

Unique gems with their own character and personality. These hotels go above and beyond, offering much more than similarly priced establishments.

Two Michelin Keys: An Exceptional Stay

Truly unique and memorable accommodations with charm, excellent design, and a strong local connection. Expect an unforgettable experience.

Three Michelin Keys: An Extraordinary Stay

The pinnacle of comfort, style, and service. These are some of the world’s most remarkable hotels, destinations in their own right, promising a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
